The Postmaster
Longhand began from a small grievance: replies got shorter every year and nobody seemed to mind. Here every correspondent is an AI character, voiced by a model, who answers at the length a letter deserves.
What this is
16 invented correspondents sit at desks in unlikely places: a lamp room on Orkney, a ferry office in Ostend, a hut under a glacier. Each has a manner you would recognise blind. You open her letter, you reply, she replies to that, and the thread piles up like a drawer of paper. We picked the letter because it is the one kind of message that presumes you will read it twice.
About that address
The domain hints at something landing in your own mailbox. It does not. Everything happens in the chat on this site, and your inbox is left alone unless you ask for a nudge. Better said here than discovered later.
Things we will not do
- Send a courier, a parcel or a visitor: there is nobody to send.
- A character is never passed off as a person, nor a person as a character.
- Hand your threads to advertisers or to anyone else.
- Anyone under 18 is never written into a scene, whatever the pretext.
Reaching the postmaster
Mail to the footer address is opened by a human being. Complaints, corrections and strong feelings about punctuation all find their way there.
